As I mentioned yesterday, the church has opened up the new.lds.org site for everyone. It really is a great site!
This morning I got a chance to play around with the new site and used the scripture study feature for the first time. It took me a little while to find my way around and I thought it would be helpful for some folks to have a little intro. So I made a video up.
Overall I am pleased with the scriptures. I sent them a bit of feedback. I’ll post it here. Feel free to add your thoughts. Perhaps you have found ways around the problems I was having.
Feedback:
- The biggest problem I have is the method for marking. It is sometimes hinky to get the highlighting working. You are supposed to just hover over the verse to make the highlighter open up. But it doesn’t always work. I think there should be a “Highlighting Mode” that you can activate when you are highlighting verses that allows you to click and select a part of a verse and then the menu pops up afterward to choose the color, add a note, AND add a tag (tag is not currently one of the options). T
- Right now after you highlight anything it pops open a menu where you can edit the highlight, add a note, and add tags. I think that should not automatically pop open even time. It distracts from the scriptures. Or at least make an global option for each user where folks can decide if they want it to have that pop open each time.
- I woud love to be able to highlight multiple verses at once (passages)
- When tagging, I would like a way to browse current Tags
- Multiple Versions of the scriptures. Sometimes you want to just read the BOM and highlight all the places where it mentions a topic. It would be great to have multiple copies of the scriptures for different times, and purposes. Maybe you could use tags or folders for this as well if you could set a default tag or folder for when you were marking. Or filter and show the markings based on the tag as you read (ie. Only show Tags: BOM Christ Reading 2010).
What are your thoughts?

Hey man, thanks for the video. I found it very helpful. It showed everything you could do, without having to fumble around and figure it out. I linked to it over at Mormon Life Hacker.
Great video. Thanks for putting this together.
Jeff, great write up and thanks for painting these improvements in such a great light. I am currently one of the lead designers of the new lds.org. You have some great feedback on the highlighting and I could see how having a highlighting mode and different versions of the scriptures could be very helpful. Great ideas.
Jeff, you said that it will sync up with our mobile devices. I’m assuming that we’ll need to sign into our Gospel Library on our phones now? I would love that! Will the markings from my phone also carryover online? This is great! You amaze me bro!
Yes Jon, that is what I understand. The updates they are working on will sync up with your gospel library on your phone now. And more than likely there will be a way to mark on your phone as well. It should be sweet. I’m looking forward to it. The church is really making some amazing strides with technology.
Your video is great thanks
Is there a way to move a lesson from one of the manuals to the study notebook?
Thanks! I tried to start at the Study Notebook and couldn’t figure out anything. It would be great to be able to search marked scriptures by the highlight color. I just wish that what I mark on line would also mark in my paper edition.
Thanks again.
on your video, when reading the online scriptures you have links on the right hand side of “listen,” “print,” “download,” “share,” “my study notebook,” When I am reading my online scriptures the “my study notebook” is not there on the right hand side like yours. I’m logged in and everything too. Also when I use my study notebook, creating new folders is not possible, I guess they are called “collections.” Is this a change since you made the video> I’m a little confused why my study notebook looks so different. Thanks for any help you have. I really appreciated you video. I wish they would have something like this on the LDS.org site. I hope they can put together some sort of tutorial. For now yours helps alot, but I still have some questions. Thanks again.
I can’t get the video link (for using My Study Notebook on lds.org) to open. Can you send me the web address for the video? Thanks.
I wanted to watch the video, but it looks like the link is down. Any chance you could fix that? Thanks,
Tom
