Musings, Technology and The Gospel
So you remember those weekly reports you had to send to your mission-president while you were on a mission. You know… “I just love this area President, and my companion is awesome. We are doing just great… ” Yeah, I know that is exactly what they sounded like. Well apparently the church is testing out electronic weekly reports from missionaries… Great idea!

My mission started emailing weekly reports in 2005 - although not through this means. The percentage of letters received by the president soared into the 90s (up from 25-30%). The quality of reporting also went way up.
Of course, we also had cell phones - so our mission president would often email responses to us via SMS.
We also setup a system to SMS in our weekly numbers and a report would be generated automatically and on the president’s desk within minutes. It was far more detailed in the reporting than the previous system too.
Wow… that is awesome Josiah, I had no idea. I love the SMS system that generates reports on the president’s desk in minutes… that saves so much time! Hopefully that is where we are going as a church!
I started my mission in January 2005 and the mission had already been e-mailing weekly reports for some time. As part of that we would include our “numbers” so the mission president could see exactly how we were doing as he read the reports. This was set up via a mission website and worked beautifully. It’s definitely cool that it’s going to be a church-wide system, though.
